To assess the complementarity between wind and solar resources, the observed daily wind speed (at 10 m) and sunshine duration data for 56 years (1961–2016) from 726 national meteorological stations are collected, and the corresponding solar radiation is calculated according to Eq. (1).
The results reveal that wind energy and solar energy resources in China undergo large interannual fluctuations and show significant spatial heterogeneity. At the same time, according to the complementarity of wind and solar resources, over half of China’s regions are suitable for the complementary development of resources.
Given that wind and solar energy are distinct forms of energy within the same physical field and are typically developed simultaneously in clean energy bases, it is essential to comprehensively assess the variation patterns of complementarity metrics under different climate change scenarios.
Therefore, the spatial distribution of wind and solar resources in China is basically consistent with their complementarity, which is beneficial to the development of wind and solar power and the construction of the new power system.
