Current-source inverters, in which a large choke in the d.c. input forces an almost constant d.c. input current and hence square wave a.c. output currents, find use in very high power drives, for which the ratings of available ‘turn-off’ devices, such as bipolar transistors and GTOs, would be inadequate.
Voltage-source and current-source inverters are depicted in Fig. 3, where V VS (s) and I VS (s) in Fig. 3 (a) represent voltage and current of the voltage source; while V CS (s) and I CS (s) in Fig. 3 (b) stand for voltage and current of the current source, respectively.
The frequency converter with voltage source inverter will impose a voltage on the motor. Depending on the load the motor current will regulate itself.
