Flywheel energy storage has the advantages of fast response speed and high energy storage density, and long service life, etc, therefore it has broad application prospects for the power grid with high share of renewable energy generation, such as participating grid frequency regulation, smoothing renewable energy generation fluctuation, etc.
In this paper, a grid-connected operation structure of flywheel energy storage system (FESS) based on permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is designed, and the mathematical model of the system is established.
While many papers compare different ESS technologies, only a few research [152,153] studies design and control flywheel-based hybrid energy storage systems. Recently, Zhang et al. present a hybrid energy storage system based on compressed air energy storage and FESS.
Arani et al. present the modeling and control of an induction machine-based flywheel energy storage system for frequency regulation after micro-grid islanding. Mir et al. present a nonlinear adaptive intelligent controller for a doubly-fed-induction machine-driven FESS.
