Engie and Sungrow have commissioned the first 400 MWh phase of mainland Europe’s largest battery energy storage system in Vilvoorde, Belgium, with full capacity due by end-2025.
The project''s second and final 400 MWh phase is scheduled for grid connection before the end of 2025. Upon full commissioning, the two-phase development is projected to significantly enhance grid reliability and supply clean electricity for approximately 96,000 households in Belgium.
Amsterdam, September 30, 2025 – The first 400 MWh segment of mainland Europe''s most extensive battery energy storage system (BESS) has been successfully connected to the grid in Vilvoorde, Belgium.
Engie is also developing two other BESS projects in Belgium which already have permits in place, a 100-MW/400-MWh project in Kallo and a 80-MW/320-MWh battery in Drogenbos. The company targets 10 GW of battery capacity globally by 2030. At the end of 2023, it had 1.3 GW of battery capacity in operation and 3.6 GW secured under development.
