In the quest to scientifically develop power systems increasingly reliant on renewable energy sources, the potential and temporal complementarity of wind and solar power in China’s northwestern provinces necessitated a systematic assessment.
For example, (Zhu et al., 2017) studied the operation of water–solar–wind complementary systems in typical hydropower stations in the upper reaches of the Jinsha River but did not consider constraints such as land use and investment costs.
Accelerating energy transition towards renewables is central to net-zero emissions. However, building a global power system dominated by solar and wind energy presents immense challenges. Here, we demonstrate the potential of a globally interconnected solar-wind system to meet future electricity demands.
This study provided the first spatially comprehensive analysis of solar and Wind energy Complementarity on a global scale. In addition, it showed which regions of the world have a greater degree of Complementarity between Wind and solar energy to reduce energy storage requirements.
