The pursuit of economic viability by storage facility owners will inherently lead to charging during low-cost hours and discharging during hours that are more economically attractive. Storage can replace thermal generation in constraint markets, easing the grid and supporting Portugal’s 2040 phase-out target.
The projects listed for public feedback on the government’s consultation portal include two solar-plus-storage sites. Two solar-plus-storage projects are among five planned renewable energy sites whose details have been published for public consultation on the Portuguese Environment Agency’s Participa portal.
The project focuses on a 5 MW/20 MWh storage system at the Galp solar park in Alcoutim. This capacity will allow solar energy to be stored during periods of high generation for later use during peak demand.
