The commercialized flow battery system Zn/Br falls under the liquid/gas-metal electrode pair category whereas All-Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) contains liquid-liquid electrodes.
Over the past 20 years, four designs of flow batteries have been demonstrated: vanadium redox (VRB), zinc bromine (ZnBr), polysulphide bromide (PSB) and cerium zinc (CeZn). Major installations, in Japan and North American, use the vanadium redox and zinc bromine designs. Energy efficiency is about 85% for VRB system and 75% for ZnBr system.
Flow batteries are preferred over other standard batteries since they have a quick response time, a longer lifetime, and capacity can be increased just by increasing the tank size of the electrolytes. At present the main types of flow batteries are zinc bromine, vanadium redox, and polysulfide bromide .
